Project:
- The NSW Government is committed to the continuation of working harbour activities in Sydney Harbour and the protection of maritime industry growth and employment.
- The northern foreshore of Rozelle Bay has always been associated with maritime activity and is zoned a maritime precinct. The Master Plan for the Rozelle and Blackwattle Bays Maritime Precincts, released in 2002 has indicated preferred maritime land uses for the precinct.
- In February 2003, following an Expressions of Interest process, Agreements to Lease were signed with seven single site proponents to develop the site for maritime purposes.
- Proposals, now in various stages within the approval process, include dry boat storage, a vessel refit and repair centre, associated commercial /retail businesses and a number of maritime contracting facilities. To date the following have received development approval:
- Polaris Marine Constructions and Recovery Pty Ltd for a base for salvage, towage, special event and marine construction services at the north west of the Bay
- Sydney Slipways Pty Ltd for the development of a $27 million boat maintenance / vessel refit yard capable of handling up to 2900 boat lifts per annum, at the north east of the Bay
- Rozelle Bay Pty Ltd for the development of a $63.6 million dry stack storage and marine facility for up to 670 boats, at the centre of the Bay
- Work has commenced on the Sydney Slipways development under the ANZAC Bridge and other projects are expected to commence in 2008.
- Development of all seven proposals within the precinct is due for completion around 2009.
- In conjunction with these proposals, the realignment of James Craig Road at the rear of the precinct has been carried out by NSW Maritime and was completed in August 2007. NSW Maritime is also providing a heavy-duty common user commercial boat ramp at the western end of the precinct.
