Maritime Property - Division ProfileThe Maritime Property Division (MPD) is responsible for the appropriate development, management and use of NSW Maritime wetlands and dryland property areas totalling approximately $450M. These include the major port beds of Sydney Harbour and its tributaries, Botany Bay, Newcastle Harbour, Port Kembla Harbour and some foreshore areas. The MPD has a total of 52 staff in five branches that carry out the following functions: Strategic DevelopmentStrategic Development is responsible for forward planning (such as capital investment and maintenance plans), stakeholder negotiations, preparation of master plans and subsequent expressions of interest for the development of foreshore sites for maritime industries. Major ProjectsMajor Projects develops and maintains maritime facilities or renews NSW Maritime’s existing properties and structures including, where appropriate, facilitating private sector development. The most recent project completed is the cargo storage area for the multi-purpose berth at the Port of Eden. Current projects include:
Projects for which construction has not yet commenced include a replacement pontoon wharf at East Circular Quay. It also manages the Rozelle Bay superyacht marina and other vessels located at former commercial port wharves within Sydney Harbour. Property AdministrationProperty Administration manages NSW Maritime’s 2,150 commercial, private and government wetland leases, purchases maritime related properties and sell surplus properties as required and effectively manages the property portfolio to provide a sound financial return to the State Government, for example from NSW Maritime’s major commercial landholding, the Maritime Trade Towers. Property PlanningProperty Planning assesses foreshore development proposals and applications through balanced consideration of community and commercial needs. It reviews applications for land owner’s consent, provides development approval and gives construction approval to proposed structures on or near NSW Maritime land as well as integrated development applications for certain developments (Part 3A permits) within 40 metres of the mean high water mark and for stormwater discharge. It also provides management and advice on major planning and environmental matters involving submerged lands (land below MHWM), eg beach restoration works at Botany Bay. Survey and Spatial InformationSurvey and Spatial Information activities span right across NSW Maritime. Mapping and spatial data tasks include the collection, processing, maintenance and distribution of spatial information, production of boating maps, and development and implementation of on-line systems for access to NSW Maritime’s spatial databases. Databases include leased structures, assets owned by NSW Maritime, navigation aids, boating facilities, moorings and bathymetry. Survey activities include cadastral, hydrographic and engineering surveys, the subdivision of NSW Maritime’s land title, determination of mean high water mark definitions and maintenance of historic records and data.
