Redevelopment of Balls Head Coal Loader, Waverton

Located on the western side of the Waverton Peninsula in Balls Head Bay, the Balls Head Coal Loader has heritage significance. It operated as an import facility for coal shipped from the Hunter Valley between 1917 and 1992. Its waterside structures, comprising a set of fender / berthing dolphins and a steel access walkway running along the edge of a high sandstone wall and a 166 metre-long substantial timber wharf running perpendicular to the shore, are in poor condition with access barred to the public.

The Waverton Peninsula Strategic Master Plan envisages that the coal loader wharves be redeveloped into a marina for large vessels. This would occur consistent with the development of the adjacent land area, platforms and tunnels into public open space by North Sydney Council. Concept drawings are being prepared with a view to calling for Registrations of Interest from the private sector for redevelopment of the site during 2008.
